Oak - one of the most impressive trees

The history of oak dates back to ancient times.

The first fossils related to the history of oaks appeared about 35 million years ago, with tree features similar to those of modern oaks. Oak wood has a certain resistance to water, which is why it was used in the past for making things like wine barrels or even boats. Oak is widespread throughout the northern temperate zone and at high altitudes in the tropics.

Its fruits, acorns, provide food for small game. Today, there are about 450 species of various trees and shrubs of the beech family. Among the best known are the white oak and the red oak. Oak wood is used extensively in the construction industry, especially in the manufacture of flooring, furniture, and veneer. White oaks have bristleless leaves, sometimes with glandular margins. The oaks are easily propagated by means of the acorns mentioned above, and grow well in slightly moist or sandy soil. Oaks are hardy and long-lived, but do not tolerate shade. All oak species are strong, hard, heavy and dense, and their high tannin content makes them very resistant to attack by pests or fungi.

Oak is one of the most popular woods used in furniture production. Famous designers such as Gustav Stickley and Frank Lioyd Wright also relied on oak. Oak is highly durable, easy to work with and looks great stained or with a clear natural finish. Its wood has a multitude of shades, and a grain that is completely unique and inimitable. Oak's versatility means it can bring a modern piece of furniture to life. Oak wood can darken over time and take on more amber tones. This happens as a result of the wood being exposed to oxygen and UV light.

When it comes to oak furniture, most people don't even realize the change because it is very subtle. However, they may notice it if they have more oak pieces at home. For this reason, it is generally better to buy a whole set of oak furniture at once. One final interesting fact, as is usually the case. Did you know that oak acorns can be made into flour for human consumption?
