Royal walnut - Roman symbol of fertility and food of the rich

Its history began to be written in the Persian Empire. The nut was brought to Europe for its tasty fruit sometime in the 15th century, and it was Charlemagne himself who was responsible for its importation.

The ancient Romans dedicated the nut tree to the god Jupiter. Nuts were considered a symbol of fertility and the food of the rich. With their fatty acid content and nutritional value, nuts easily surpass meat, which is why vegetarians call them 'nature's meat'. They are high in protein, fat and minerals. The name 'Royal Walnut' already indicates that they are massive trees. Their trunks tend to be massive and their branches quite thick. The leaves are distinctive and large, with a delicate fragrance. The nuts usually flower in April or May. Their leaves, fruits and pericarp are harvested.

The colouring of the wood has an interesting, multi-coloured pattern. Walnuts often grow in gardens or parks. They are cultivated mostly for their fruit, walnuts, and their wood, but they have countless other uses. For example, walnut tea is known to be a powerful antioxidant and good for purifying the blood. Walnut tinctures in turn help with skin diseases and also revitalize damaged skin. Nut extract is an excellent remedy for the stomach, aids digestion, rids the body of parasites and overall strengthens the body. The nut is also credited with the ability to lower blood sugar levels. When used externally, it also has miraculous effects. Warm compresses of the steamy leaves draw out pus, cleanse wounds and minimize swelling. Walnut oil is also known to strengthen hair roots.

Walnut wood is hard and strong, mouldable, therefore it is very valuable for carpenters, but also for artistic carvers. Even our grandmothers had walnut furniture in their living rooms, which is still made today. However, its price is higher, as it is a rare and harder to find wood. Walnut wood is popularly used to make veneers, the aforementioned furniture, but also jewellery - earrings, brooches, pendants and rings. It has also found use in the music industry, for the manufacture of pianos, and is also used for the dashboards of luxury cars. Walnut wood decorations in the form of bowls and trays will enliven any interior.

If you notice a scratch or scuff on your furniture, we have a tip for you. Just paint the imperfection with walnut pulp, either walnut or pecan. The pulp contains a restorative oil that minimizes imperfections. One final interesting fact. Our ancestors always placed garden tables under two walnut trees. Not only did they provide a pleasant shade to the resting area, but most importantly, they repelled annoying insects.
