According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, beech is one of the least endangered deciduous tree species. It is one of the most common trees in Europe. Our ancestors were already closely associated with beech wood. They believed in its ability to absorb bad energies and remove various ailments and diseases from the body. They attributed to beech wood a tendency to remove migraines and headaches. Grandmother herbalists also attributed to beech the ability to grant wishes and carved magical omens into its bark.

The beech grows to a height of 30 to 40 metres and its fruit is a beech tree. It is undemanding to soil and hardy, suitable for our temperate climate. It is a massive tree with a slender, continuous trunk and an ovate crown. The beech wood is light brown, with a darker sapwood when fresh and a lighter zone of mature wood. After drying, the colour difference between the mature wood and sapwood disappears. The wood is therefore generally harder, with lower strength, white, sometimes even cream-coloured with a pinkish tinge. Its finish is simple, it bends and stains easily, while retaining its shape.

Due to the formation of a false heartwood, wood is more often subject to wood-boring insects. It can swell visibly in damp environments. Beech wood does not have pronounced summer rings and has a more homogeneous structure. Beech wood has a wide range of uses. The finest quality beech wood is used to make veneers for aesthetic purposes for interior furniture, beds or chairs. It is also used in the production of flooring, tiles and as firewood it is characterised by its high calorific value. Beech wood is durable, lasting for many years, so it is worth investing in.

If you love the smell and look of solid wood, beech furniture will be right for you and you'll love it. It will pleasantly surprise you with its durability, beauty and quality, and to top it all off, it will beautifully scent your home. Beech is often planted as an ornamental tree in city parks and is also popular for creating hedges. Under the Tatras, in Stary Smokovec, you will find the sought-after, well-known lover's tree, which is the beech. It is said that if you kiss under this tree, your love will be as solid as Tatra granite. If you would like to take a trip and get acquainted with this beech tree, you will find it in front of the building of the Mountain Rescue Service, which also houses the Tatra Information Office.
