Acacia - the most stable and hardy tree species of our temperate zone.

Agate was originally planted in Europe as an ornamental tree. Over time, however, it has become domesticated and in some places has even become an invasive plant, as it is able to establish itself in a variety of soils

If planting is not corrected, it can easily crowd out native plants. Acacia came to Europe from North America. It was brought here by the then director of the botanical gardens in Paris. In Slovakia, the first acacia trees were cultivated around 1720. Foresters first began to reforest Slovak forests with acacia trees in the vicinity of Banská Bystrica and in the south of Slovakia, where acacia trees still form extensive acacia groves.

Acacia tree grows to a height of 25m. It has a grey-brown bark layer and the branches are studded with thorns. They flower in May and June with white flowers with a distinctive fragrance. The tree has a branched, irregular crown. Interestingly, apart from the flowers, all other parts of the acacia are violently poisonous. Acacia wood has an amazingly rich texture with a multitude of colours and patterns. It has distinctive summer rings and often unique knots are noticeable in the wood. The colour of acacia wood is very varied. From whitish colours, through many shades of yellow, orange and reddish tints, to grey and brown shades. The rustic style fully captures the design of agate.

Acacia is the most stable and hardy tree species found in our temperate geographic zone. It is therefore a suitable tree for outdoor use. The wood is also resistant to wood-destroying pests and fungi, which is why it is used to make everything that needs a long life to exist. Examples are bridges, pillars, water structures and even wine barrels. The wood contains various resins and salts. With good care, wood can last for 100 years when under a roof, whereas unprotected it lasts about 40 years. Under water, it can even survive for 300 years.

In addition to the products mentioned above, various furniture items and parquet are made from acacia wood. Another unique product of acacia is acacia honey. It has a delicate and delicious taste. Real honey is always a little scratchy in the throat, whereas acacia honey is not at all. It has positive disinfectant effects and lowers blood pressure with long-term use. It is a good aid for digestive problems and is an important nutrient for the recovery of physical and mental fatigue. It is an important honey-bearing plant, as one tree can provide up to 8 kilograms of honey.
